The word “rebinding” here is a misnomer. Typically when people refer to bible “rebinding”, they’re actually referring to rebacking or re-covering. While the binding of the text is sometimes dealt with here, typically we are replacing the cover, ribbons etc. This term has, for better or worse, become commonplace in bible communities within the greater bookbinding community, to refer to putting a new cover on a bible. Most seasoned bookbinders would find this phrasing a bit odd.

This was a unique restoration / rebinding project in which the original cover was a gift from the customer’s friend back in her college days. The cover never fit the text block properly, but she appreciated the gift and has used it these many years. The text block began falling out of the cover necessitating a repair and the customer decided to fix the sizing issue, but wanted to preserve as much of the original as possible. In order to do this, I had to remove the old spine and replace it with a comparable leather. The original leather covers are very thick vegetable tanned cowhide panels which had the rawhide on the inside. These had to be lined with new leather as well. A modified re-backing technique was used for this very unique project. The text block was a glued binding, which was also redone using the Lumbeck method. Many pictures are included.
